Brand new toolkits available for Action Together members

Posted: 1 November 2024

Action Together has developed a series of toolkits, covering topics regularly identified by our members as important areas for development.

Organisations can work through the toolkit themselves, or request support from their local Development team.

Governance Toolkit

Governance is ‘The systems and processes concerned with ensuring the overall direction, effectiveness, supervision and accountability of an organisation.”

(The Governance of Voluntary Organisations, Cornforth 2003)

A charity is governed by a trustee board that takes responsibility for all elements of the charity's work. Trustees have specific duties which they must follow.

The Governance toolkit provides a suite of resources can be downloaded, in part or in full, to help our member organisations to establish effective structures and practices.

The toolkit contains advice and guidance in key areas such as Trustee/Board Recruitment & Development, Managing Risk, policies, running meetings, legal duties and accountabilities

The toolkit was created for us by Beyond Profit*, and includes video guides, written resources, links to external support and adaptable templates.

Finance Toolkit

This toolkit was created for us by Beyond Profit* and aims to empower our members with the essential financial knowledge to effectively manage and monitor their finances.

It includes templates, sample policies and video guides and spreadsheets that can be downloaded and adapted to suit the needs of each member organisation.

It includes sections on budgeting, fundraising and grant writing, policies, compliance and financial reporting requirements.

*Beyond Profit are charity finance specialists, who provide support to charities, to help them improve their financial and governance processes, become more efficient, and grow their reach.

Theory of Change Toolkit

Theory of change is a way for you to set out your understanding and beliefs about how the work that you do makes a difference. It’s called ‘theory’ because it’s your organisation’s model or plan for your work.

It is usually set out as a combination of a diagram and words that link the need for your work to the actions you take to the outcomes you achieve right through to your organisation’s vision or purpose.

Many funders/commissioners like and advocate for having a theory of change as it gives clarity and assurance of the intentions and, to some extent, competence of an organisation, as well as helping develop your strategy, support evaluation and improve communication.

This toolkit, created by Sarah Forster takes you through the process of undertaking a theory of change with your organisation.

Social Enterprise Toolkit

Social enterprises are businesses that prioritise social or environmental objectives alongside financial goals. Unlike traditional businesses that focus solely on profit, social enterprises aim to generate positive change in society while being financially sustainable

Social entrepreneurs use business strategies to create positive change, addressing social and environmental issues with innovative and sustainable solutions.

This toolkit was developed to help guide organisations interested in social entrepreneurship and provides an extensive series of guides, resources and reflective challenges around key themes such as the foundations of social entrepreneurship, strategy, growth, marketing and financial sustainability

The toolkit was created by Mantle, leaders in ethical business practices and experts in supporting other social enterprise and fostering resilient, sustainable, and ethically sound businesses.
