Neurodiversity: An introduction

This event is currently full. However you can register now and get added to a waiting list. You will be notified if spaces become available.
3 hours via Zoom Join the Starling team to get to grips with the basics of 'neurodiversity'.

Neurodiversity is a term that refers to the diversity of human minds. It is estimated that between 1 in 5 and 1 in 7 people are neurodivergent in the UK.

The term neurodivergent refers to a range of neurocognitive differences that an individual possesses, and this can affect how they think, experience and interact with the world around them.

Neurodivergencies can include innate differences such as Autism, ADHD and Dyslexia, but also differences in brain functions through experience such as PTSD and brain injury.

We will cover:

- Definitions: neurodiversity, neurodiverse, neurotypical/neuronormative, neurodivergence, neurodivergent - what do these words mean and when/how do you use them?

- Lived experience, the 'social' model and super skills: what barriers exist for neurodivergent communities, how can we reframe difference as a quality rather than a deficit?

- Approaches to neuro-inclusivity: what practical considerations can you take in your organisation to become more inclusive of neurodivergent minds?

- Useful resources: what is out there to support you and your organisation to learn more about neurodiversity?

We want to support professionals across a range of sectors to become more aware of the simple considerations they can make to accommodate those who may be neurodivergent, whether they have a diagnosis or not.
