Dane Bank Green Space Community Group responsible for promoting conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment by promoting biological diversity, environmental awareness and wildlife protection. We are looking for volunteers that can help with maintaining the DBGS Sensory Garden which requires regular care to ensure that it remains a vibrant, welcoming space that stimulates all the senses. Also, from time-to-time, work to maintain and improve planted areas including shrubs, trees and hedges. Volunteers are needed in the afternoon or early evening, or on the occasional weekend

- Tasks: The key tasks are as follows:
A. Plant Care
• Regular weeding to prevent them from overtaking the Sensory Garden and competing with the plants for nutrients.
• Watering plants as and when required, keeping in mind the specific needs of each species. Some may require more frequent watering than others.
• Pruning/trimming overgrown plants, shrubs, and trees to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth.
• Deadheading: Remove dead flowers to promote further blooming and maintain a neat appearance.
• Pest control: Monitor for pests or diseases and apply appropriate treatments, such as organic pest controls or beneficial insects.
B. Accessibility and Safety
• Pathway maintenance: Keep pathways clear of debris, overgrown plants, or obstacles. Ensure they are wheelchair accessible, if needed.
• Bench and seating upkeep: Ensure that seating areas are clean, comfortable, and accessible.
• Safety checks: Regularly inspect the garden for any hazards, such as litter, broken garden furniture, loose stepping stones, or sharp branches.
C. Seasonal Adjustments
• Plant selection: Some plants are seasonal, so you may need to replace or supplement them depending on the time of year to ensure a year-round sensory experience.
• Mulching and composting: Add mulch to insulate plant roots in the winter and reduce water evaporation in the summer. Composting can also help keep soil healthy. - Training: DBGS Committee members will provide training, advice and support as required
