The Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership are investing in a pioneering ‘proof of concept’ programme to reduce alcohol exposed pregnancies with the ambition to eliminate new cases of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).  As part of this project a specialist team of 3 Midwives are rolling out training to raise awareness of FASD across Bury, Rochdale and Oldham, reinforcing the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance on ‘No alcohol-No Risk’ and preventing an alcohol exposed pregnancy, including information on Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC).

The two hour training session will consist of:-

  • An overview of FASDs including the range of conditions and how they can be prevented
  • Summary of how women are screened for alcohol use in pregnancy
  • What effects FASD has in adulthood
  • How to deliver brief intervention to prevent an alcohol exposed pregnancy, including contraception
  • The Maternity Alcohol Exposed Pregnancy Pathway
  • What preventative work is being completed at local level
  • Information on where to refer women and families to for support

Target audience; anystaff that come into contact with women of childbearing age and families.
