The Home Office values the contribution made to the UK by the Windrush generation and the Home Secretary has expressed his commitment to do right by those affected.

The Home Office knows that Commonwealth citizens who live in the UK, or have done in the past, may have concerns about their immigration status and they are encouraged to get in touch with the Home Office so it can help. It has been clear that no-one with the right to be in the UK will be asked to leave.

The Home Office has a dedicated team helping Commonwealth citizens who have lived in the UK for a long time and are worried about their immigration status. Anyone who is worried can call the helpline on freephone 0800 678 1925. The line is open Monday to Saturday between 9am to 5pm and Sunday between 10am to 4pm, or by email at commonwealthtaskforce@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.

Individuals will be allocated a caseworker who will work with them to build a picture of their life in the UK, and it will aim to resolve their case within two weeks of relevant information being obtained.

Windrush surgeries

The Home Office will be delivering surgeries to offer individuals concerned about their status the opportunity to speak in confidence to Home Office staff, and request support to resolve their case; and it is asking community groups and Public bodies to support it in hosting these events.

If you are interested in assisting this initiative please email WindrushSurgeries@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Compensation scheme

The Home Office has called for evidence on compensation for Commonwealth citizens, including the Windrush generation, who have faced difficulties in establishing their status under the immigration system. This was an opportunity for anyone affected to tell the Home Office about their experience to help shape the compensation scheme. The call for evidence will ran until 8 June and will be followed by a full consultation on the details of the scheme. If you are interested in hosting an engagement session for affected individuals to tell us about their experience; or you know an affected individual who wants to submit evidence, please email Windrushcompensation@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk
