Rochdale Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Network has launched the FASD Parent and Carer Experiences E-book to support people caring for children with FASD, raise awareness and shared lived experiences to drive positive change. This network is supported by the Greater Manchester Alcohol Exposed Pregnancy Programme.
FASD results when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body. FASD is a spectrum. Each person with FASD is affected differently. It is often considered a ‘hidden disability’ and is 100% preventable.
Parent and carers who are supported by members of the Rochdale FASD Network have shared their stories of caring for children with FASD. The peer support e-book includes journeys to diagnosis, navigating health and social care support systems, schools and education. It has been created to support parents and carers of children diagnosed, or in the process of seeking diagnosis, with FASD.
Dr Raja Mukherjee, Consultant Psychiatrist, FASD Clinic, Surrey, commented: “FASD is a life-long disorder for those affected, but if properly supported, outcomes can be good. This e-book brings together numerous resources into one place that helps parents and those affected by FASD.
“It will be a really useful resource for families and those with FASD.”
Local charity, Action Together facilitates the FASD Network across the Rochdale Borough.
Kerry Bertram, Rochdale Strategic Locality Lead at Action Together, added: “The Rochdale Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Network is proud to have launched the FASD Parent and Carer Experiences E-book as it is passionate about peer support.
“The e-book aims to instil confidence in parents and carers, give them a place to find solace in peer support and make a positive difference to the lives of their children. The FASD Network wants parents and carers of children with FASD to know they are not alone!”
Early diagnosis of FASD and support are essential. If it is not diagnosed early and a child does not receive appropriate support, they are more likely to experience challenges associated with the condition. The FASD Parent and Carer Experiences E-book provides support links at a local and national level.
