Aims/priorities: The Trust currently offers two funds:
- Individuals and Families Fund
- British Gas Energy Support Fund
Both are intended to tackle fuel poverty by clearing the energy debts of struggling households and respond to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Who can apply? Individual and Families Fund
Applicants must:
- Live in England, Scotland or Wales.
- Be a pre-payment meter customer with between £50 and £1,700 of energy debt or a credit customer with between £250 and £1,7000 of energy debt.
- Have a household income of less than £18,723 or someone in the household is registered disabled and receives a disability benefit or receives Carers Allowance or has 3+ children.
- Not have received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust within the last two years.
- Be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity or dual fuel energy account in their name. The energy account must relate to their main residence.
- Have electric and/or gas debt.
- Be in or facing fuel poverty.
- Have received help from a money advice agency within the last six months.
The fund is available to British Gas and non-British Gas customers. However, non-customers should check with their own provider first, as there may be funds available to support them.
British Gas Energy Support Fund
Applicants must:
- Be British Gas credit or pre-payment meter customer.
- Live in England, Scotland or Wales.
- Not have received a British Gas Energy Trust grant within the last 12 months.
- Be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity or dual fuel energy account in their own name or be a member of that household. The energy account must relate to their main residence.
- Have electric and/or gas debt of between £250 and £2,000 on an active energy account for a main residence.
- Be in or facing fuel poverty.
- Have received help from a money advice or guidance agency.
Please note that the British Gas Energy Trust is interested in funding applications where the applicant can show a sustainable position moving forward.
Grant amount: It should be noted that the Trust does not award cash payments, and will instead credit the householder account.
Individual and Families Fund will cover arrears of between £50 and £1,700.
British Gas Energy Support Fund will cover arrears of between £250 and £2,000.
Application process: The Energy Support Fund will open for applications at 9am on 4 November 2024.
The Individual and Families Fund is open to credit and pre-payment meter customers.
Applicants must provide the details of a money advice organisation who has supported them.
