A chance to shine a spotlight on our member groups, and celebrate their heritage with the theme for this year's Black History Month - Reclaiming Narratives

The theme for this year's Black History Month is 'Reclaiming Narratives' and, throughout the month, we are delighted to be bringing you the personal stories of some fabulous Action Together members.

These people are paving the way for change and challenging the system in their communities. We want to ensure that their voices are heard, their experiences are acknowledged, and their contributions are celebrated. This week, we're pleased to bring you the story of Real Vision Community Group, an organisation supporting men in Oldham, and surrounding areas, to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Can you tell us a little about your group?

Our group (SAFE SQUARE SANCTUARY is a Male Mentorship and Empowerment Network (MMEN),  with special interest in Black men and  boys. We are passionate about creating a safe and supportive space for Black men and boys in Oldham. Our organization is dedicated to providing the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to help these individuals thrive. We offer a variety of programs, including mentorship, workshops, support groups, and community outreach initiatives.

Through our efforts, we aim towards:

  • Creating a safe space: Establishing a physical or virtual environment where Black men and boys can share their experiences without judgment.
  • Education and empowerment: Offering training programs on various topics such as health, decision-making, and leadership.
  • Culturally appropriate services: Providing services tailored to the specific needs of Black men and boys in the community.
  • Violence reduction and family harmony: Promoting healthy family relationships and reducing violence.
  • Community engagement: Organizing events and activities to bring Black men and boys together.
  • Advocacy and support: Advocating for policies and initiatives that address the specific needs and challenges faced by Black men and boys in Oldham.

 

What prompted you to get involved and support your community?

As a dedicated community members in England, we are committed to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for all, particularly for Black men and boys who may face unique challenges.

Involvement in community initiatives is driven by several factors:

  • A passion for social justice: I believe that everyone deserves equal opportunities and should be treated with dignity and respect.
  • A desire to create positive change: I am motivated to contribute to the betterment of my community and work towards addressing systemic inequalities.
  • A commitment to community empowerment: We believe that individuals and communities have the power to create positive change when provided with the necessary resources and support.

By actively participating in community organizations and initiatives, we aim to:

  • Advocate for the needs of Black men and boys: Raise awareness of the challenges they face and advocate for policies that promote equality and inclusion.
  • Support community-led initiatives: Collaborate with other community members to develop and implement programs that address local needs.
  • Foster a sense of belonging: Create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History is a vital component of understanding the complex tapestry of human history. It encompasses the rich contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black people throughout time, recognizing their resilience, creativity, and strength in the face of adversity.

       Black History is about:

  • Celebrating achievements: Acknowledging the significant contributions Black individuals have made to various fields, from science and art to literature, music, and sports.
  • Honoring our ancestors: Paying tribute to those who came before us, enduring unimaginable hardships and fighting for equality.
  • Understanding our heritage: Delving into the history, culture, and traditions of Black communities around the world.
  • Inspiring future generations: Seeing Black History as a source of empowerment and motivation for those to come.
  • Challenging biases: Using Black History as an opportunity to confront and address systemic racism and discrimination.

Black History is not merely a historical record; it's a living and evolving narrative that shapes our present and future. It's about understanding our shared humanity and working towards a more just and equitable world for all.

What change would you like to see in your borough that would benefit the Black community?

The desires and needs of Black people in the UK are diverse and multifaceted, reflecting the experiences of a complex and multifaceted community. While it's impossible to speak for everyone, here are some key areas where significant change is sought:

  • Racial Equality and Justice: Addressing systemic racism in institutions like the police, education, and healthcare. This includes measures such as: 
    • Increased accountability for racial bias
    • Investment in diversity and inclusion training
    • Fairer representation in leadership positions
  • Economic Opportunity: Tackling disparities in employment, housing, and education to create a more level playing field for Black people. This might involve: 
    • Targeted job training and mentorship programs
    • Affordable housing initiatives
    • Support for Black-owned businesses
  • Mental Health and Well-being: Addressing the disproportionate rates of mental health issues among Black people. This could include: 
    • Increased access to culturally competent mental health services
    • Initiatives to reduce stigma around mental health
  • Representation and Inclusion: Ensuring that Black people are adequately represented in media, politics, and other areas of public life. This might involve: 
    • Promoting diversity in the media
    • Supporting Black candidates in elections
    • Encouraging greater participation in decision-making processes

It's important to note that these are just a few examples, and the specific needs and priorities of Black people in the UK may vary. It's essential to listen to and amplify the voices of Black individuals and communities to ensure that their concerns are addressed effectively.

And finally, what would you say to Black people in Greater Manchester to inspire them to make a difference in the community or wider?

Black people in Greater Manchester, you have the power to shape your community and create a brighter future for yourselves and generations to come. Your voices, your experiences, and your unique perspectives are invaluable assets.

Don't be afraid to use your platform to speak out about issues that matter to you. Whether it's through social media, community meetings, or elected office, your voice can inspire others and drive change.

Get involved in community organizations and initiatives that are working to address the challenges faced by Black people. Your participation can make a real difference in the lives of others.

Support Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in your community. By patronizing these businesses, you are not only helping to create jobs but also supporting the economic empowerment of Black people.

Educate yourself and others about Black history, culture, and the contributions of Black people to society. Knowledge is power, and by sharing your knowledge with others, you can help to break down stereotypes and promote understanding.

Believe in yourself and your potential. You have the ability to overcome challenges, achieve your goals, and make a positive impact on the world. Together, we can build a more just and equitable future for all.
